For the past couple of years, Indian banks have emerged as one of the leading job creators compared to other sectors. This led many fresh graduates to appear for banking exams regularly.
To compensate for the large no. of retirements happening in middle/ senior cadre, public sector banks are also recruiting aggressively. This trend continued in the year 2016 as well.
A common selection process is held by IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection), which is responsible for conducting common written exams & interview for different positions in 20 government banks.
Candidates who qualify finally with the necessary cutoffs are allotted to banks based on their scores.
In this method, merit plays an important role.
A top scoring person gets a job in the bank he/ she chose as their 1st preference. The least scoring candidate in merit list is allotted as per their 5th or 6th or even his/ her last preference.
Every year, the IBPS bank exams are held during the second part of that calendar year.So the following data are for recruitment exams conducted in the year 2015-16.
4 major bank exams were held by IBPS in 2016 for a total of 48,747 vacancies as:
State Bank of India was also a big recruiter in 2016 with 2200 PO & 17140 clerical posts. The final results for these recruitments were also released recently.
These openings will be filled in the year 2017 once the interview/ merit list are released.
Although vacancies are only in few thousands the response for these exams were much higher. Here are some statistics:
Will there be any SBI recruitment/ jobs in 2017?
State Bank of India does not participate in IBPS common recruitment. They issue separate notifications & select candidates based on scores in those exams.
So whenever an SBI recruitment notification is released, atleast 20 lakh candidates apply due to the huge brand value of SBI.There will be no SBI associate banks recruitment hereafter as they will soon merge with SBI.
There is very less chance for SBI recruitment in 2017 as employees from associate banks will be assigned new roles in SBI due to this merger.
But, SBI is an unpredictable organization & may release a recruitment advt suddenly. Hence we need to wait & watch if any announcements come up.
This brings us to the next question: How many bank jobs to be filled 2017?
The number of bank jobs in 2017 is expected to be similar like last year – which is around 8000 – 9000 officers & 17,000 – 19,000 clerks.
Apart from these govt. banks, many other private banks such as ICICI Bank, Federal Bank, Axis Bank etc., also conduct recruitments.but they dont require these IBPS exam scores.(see apply for bank jobs without IBPS scores)
