National News:

International Mother Language Day (Bhasha Divas) was observed across the world on 21 February.

The 42nd Khajuraho Dance Festival started in Khajuraho, Chhattarpur district in Madhya Pradesh.

A malayalam film ‘Ottaal’ won the Crystal Bear award at the International Berlin Film Festival.The film is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s short story ‘Vanka’ by Malayali director Jayaraj.

Milind Kulkarni, Kiran Musunuru, Sachin Patel, Vikram Shyam, Shwetak Patel, and Rahul Mangharam are the 6 Indian Americans among 106 people who will receive the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists & Engineers from the US President Barack Obama.

Science & Technology:

Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister for Science and Technology launched the Ksheer Scanner system used to detect Adulteration in Milk. It was developed by CSIR-CEERI.

NASA is developing a new space telescope called the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) with a field of view which is 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

A US startup has developed a unisex smart watch ‘Ritot’, that projects time and notifications on the user’s hand.The price of the watch is $199.

Umberto Eco, the philosopher & novelist who is known for his work ‘The Name Of The Rose’ died at the age of 84 after battling cancer.

Sports News:

Mayookha Johny has won the silver medal in women’s triple jump at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships by crossing a distance of 14.00 metres. Renjith Maheshwary also won a silver in the men’s triple jump with 16.16 metres.

The Jaypee Punjab Warriors won the Hockey India League (HIL) 2016 trophy after defeating Kalinga Lancers 6-1 in the final at the Astro Turf Stadium in Ranchi.

India increased their medals tally to 7 to finish the 7th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Banking & Economy:

UK banking firm HSBC reported a net loss of $858 million for the quarter ended December compared to a net profit of $1.73 billion for the same period last year.

The non-performing assets (NPAs) of public sector banks (PSBs) have increased to nearly Rs. 4 lakh crore, which is 1.5 times the market value of these lenders.
