Vice President asks Jal Shakti Ministry and NITI Aayog to study feasibility of drinking water project for Udayagiri, AP.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday urged the Jal Shakti Ministry and NITI Aayog to study the feasibility of a drinking water project for Udayagiri, a drought-prone area in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh.
- The Jal Shakti ministry was formed by merging the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
- The ministry will focus on issues ranging from providing clean drinking water, international and inter-states water disputes, to the Namami Gange project aimed at cleaning Gang and its tributaries, and sub tributaries.
‘World Turtle Day’ celebrated on May 23.
The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) along with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), its project partner in the ‘Biodiversity Conservation Initiative Phase II’, celebrated World Turtle Day on May 23, through an online webinar.
- American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a nonprofit organization for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle, created World Turtle Day to celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.
- The theme of World Turtle Day 2020 was to focus on bringing attention and increasing knowledge on the subject of tortoises and turtles.
World Turtle Day is celebrated annually on May 23, since 2000.
WHO suspends clinical trials of hydroxychloroquine over safety concerns
The World Health Organization said it had temporarily suspended clinical trials of hydroxychloriquine as a potential treatment for COVID-19.
The decision came after the publication of a study in the Lancet stating that the usage of drug on COVID-19 patients could increase their likelihood of dying, WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a virtual press conference.
Indian Army major selected for UN award for her works in South Sudan
Major Suman Gawani of Indian Army has been selected for the 2019 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.
- She received the award for her role in raising awareness about the need to protect women and children from sexual violence during conflict.
- Gawani will share the award with Commander Carla Monteiro de Castro Araujo of Brazilian Navy.
Major Gawani and Commander Araujo will receive the award during an online ceremony on the ‘International Day of UN Peacekeepers’ that will be presided by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres .
Hunar Haat to restart from September 2020 with the theme of “Local to Global”
Hunar Haat , organized by the Ministry of Minority Affairs as a platform to promote artisans and craftsmen from across the country, will restart from September 2020 after a gap of about 5 months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
- The theme of this year`s event will be “Local to Global”
- The Hunar Haat initiative of the government is a platform to artisans across India to showcase and sell their collections through the stalls at the fair.
There will be a special “Jaan Bhi, Jahaan Bhi” pavilion to create health awareness among the people with the theme of “Say no to panic, yes to precautions”.
Centre identifies 4 cities as role model for handling coronavirus
The central government has identified four cities- Bengaluru, Jaipur, Indore and Chennai as possible role models for other cities in handling COVID-19 cases.
Meetings have been arranged between different municipal bodies to share their experiences on 2 broad aspects: effective practices in handling a very high number of cases and keeping the mortality rate low.
IAF to launch No.18 squadron with a fleet of LCA Tejas at Coimbatore
The Indian Air Force is set to operationalize its squadron ‘No.18 – Flying Bullets’ with a fleet of the Light Combat Aircraft, LCA Tejas at its Sulur base near Coimbatore.
- It will be launched by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal R K S Bhadauria on May 27.
- The new squadron will be IAF`s second to operate with the modern multi-role light fighter aircraft – TEJAS.
- The No.18 Squadron was formed in 1965 and has the distinction of being the first to land and operate from Srinagar. It has been revived on the 1st April this year at the Sulur base.
The LCA Tejas is a tailless, 4th generation, compound delta-wing aircraft developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The supersonic aircraft is considered the lightest and the smallest of its kind.
Hockey legend and triple Olympic gold medallist Balbir Singh Sr passes away at 95
Three-time Olympic gold medal-winning hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr died on May 26 after battling multiple health issues for over two weeks.
- Balbir Sr was the only Indian among 16 legends chosen by the International Olympic Committee across modern Olympic history.
- His world record for most goals scored by an individual in the men’s hockey final of the Olympics still remains unbeaten
PCB set to appoint Saqlain Mushtaq as coach at High Performance Centre
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly looking to appoint former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as coach for international players at the National High Performance Centre in Lahore.
Saqlain, has a tally of 208 wickets in 49 Tests and 288 wickets in 169 ODIs.He also has previous experience of having been with the England, West Indies and New Zealand teams as spin bowling coach/consultant.
